INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM

International English Language Testing System is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work in countries where English is the primary language for communication. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. 

IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment.It covers the four language skills- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. 

IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, UK and USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.

There are 4 modules in IELTS examination. 

• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
• Speaking

Each of these module has a maximum score of 9 bands. 

LISTENING

Listening Session contains 40 questions which should be answered within 30 minutes.
A variety of question types are used, such as: 

•  multiple choice,
•  match the following,
•  plan/map/diagram labelling, 
• form completion,
•  note completion,
•  table completion, 
• flow-chart completion,
•  summary completion, 
• sentence completion,
•  short-answer questions.

READING

Reading module has 3 sections to be completed in 60 minutes. 

Candidate needs to understand the passage thoroughly and rightly answer the different varieties of question. These different types of questions are mentioned below which assesses the reading skills of the candidate:

• Yes/ No/ Not given
• Answer the following
• List of heading
• Label the diagram
• Fill in the blanks
• Fill in the blanks (box given)
• Multiple choice question
• Match the following

WRITING

Writing section  has 2 tasks which should be written within 60 minutes.

In both tasks, candidates are assessed on their ability to write a response which is appropriate in terms of content, the organisation of ideas, and the accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar.

SPEAKING

Speaking Session has 3 tasks for approximately 15 minutes as an interview. 

A wide range of speaking skills is assessed, including the ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences and situations by answering a range of questions; the ability to speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language and organising ideas coherently; and the ability to express and justify opinions and to analyse, discuss and speculate about issues.
